“Ema” - small wooden plaques hang outside a Shinto Shrine in Ueno, Tokyo.
The front of the plaques traditionally have a picture of a horse (ema means horse picture).
The name originates from a time when real horses were offered in exchange for blessings.
On the back Shinto worshippers write prayers or wishes to the Kami - spirits or gods. Click here for close up.
